Capital of the World

On September 19, 2009, within the framework of the “Americans at American Corner,” lecture series, the Yerevan American Corner hosted U.S. Embassy Regional Security Officer Gordon Goetz.
Mr. Goetz presented a very informative lecture about New York City, the self-proclaimed capital of the world. He covered major aspects of the city’s history as well as modern life, discussing its famous landmarks, parks, sports, food, and people. Students learned interesting details about the five main parts of the city - The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Details and photos of Central Park amazed people for its beauty and location in the middle of Manhattan’s skyscrapers.
More than 70 people attended the lecture and asked numerous questions. Participants asked about religious and racial discrimination in the city. Mr. Goetz, who is from New York, noted that most New Yorkers embrace the diversity of the city. Students also asked about the city’s night life and Mr. Goetz noted that New York is often called the “city that never sleeps.”
The lecture was followed by a Globe Trekker Travelers film about New York.
Participants gained information about New York, its history, culture and life. Through this type of event, the American Corner introduces American traditions and life style elements to Armenians.
