Fulbright stories. Rediscovering the USA

On October 24, 2009, the American Corner in Yerevan - within the framework of “Armenians at the American Corner U.S. Government Alumni Presentation Series” - hosted a presentation entitled “Fulbright Stories: Rediscovering the USA." The guest speaker was Astghik Shahkhatuni.

The 2007-2008 Fulbrighter shared her experience with Armenian students who are interested in applying for the program. She discussed her experiences in the U.S. and provided informal feedback to future applicants.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program awards grants to foreign scholars to conduct post-doctorial research at U.S. universities for an academic year or term. The Fulbright Program was named after Senator J. William Fulbright from Arkansas, who proposed the program in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries.

During the lecture about 30 participants addressed their questions to Astghik. Questions included inquiries about general eligibility, the TOEFL test, and culture shock. Astghik mentioned that she traveled to ten U.S. states and tried to explore them as much as possible. She noted that she found Americans were really very hospitable.
