Native Americans Featured in November Film Series
1:00pm 28.11.2009
Dear Patrons and Friends,
The November Saturday Film Series will be devoted to films by and about “Native Americans” or the Indigenous People of the North American continent sometimes called, “Indians”. The first Saturday, November 7, we presented the award winning series made into a film entitled: “Dreamkeepers”.
This film interweaves contemporary reservation life with stories from many different nations (tribes) and does so with Native American languages and actors. It has resonances for every stage of life, humor, drama, suspense, love, personal challenges and triumphs seen through the eyes of a young man and his grandfather. The landscapes shown in this splendid film are from all over North America.
The second Saturday, November 14, we presented a documentary on “Native American Healing”. This film shows traditional elders and healers from a number of nations (tribes) who explain some of their ancient and contemporary healing modalities. After this film, Joanne Munisteri , CIED Fellow at the Yerevan State Medical University will follow with a short talk and discussion. Joanne learned from Lakota Medicine Man (wicasca wakan)the late Chief Archie Fire Lame Deer, among others, and was a sundancer (wiwayang wacipi) for many years. After this presentation Joanne will be giving away some handcrafts, books and souvenirs from the Smithsonian Museum of the Native American for those who have attended both films.
The final Saturday in November, the 28th, we presented the film “Geronimo” starring Wes Studi, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall and Matt Damon. The movie is a stunnning performance about the fearless warrior Geronimo, who was one of the last Native American leaders to surrender in conflicts between the Apaches and the U.S. This film also has actors speaking Apache and was filmed in Texas and Mexico where the Apache once lived.
All Films will begin at 1:00 pm and will have English subtitles. We welcome all of you to come!
